Epicormic shoots, also known as “suckers”, are fast growing branches that can emerge along the trunk and branches of a tree. Trees that have suffered storm related damage or that have been overly pruned and thinned will grow epicormic shoots to compensate for the loss of foliage. With the current heat, following the storms and wet weather, these shoots may grow at a faster rate and the branches they become have not had time to form a strong attachment to the truck. This can mean unstable branch growth within the affected trees that should be pruned before excessive foliage and weight causes the branch to fail or snap out of the tree.
